[DRAMA | SERIES] : STRANGERS FROM HELL : Im Si Wan, Lee Dong Wook, Lee Jung Eun dir. Lee Chang Hee
Im Si Wan and Lee Dong Wook are back with a new thriller genre limited series called Strangers From Hell. Strangers From Hell is adapted from a webtoon by Kim Yong Ki.
Strangers From Hell is about a man in his 20s named Yoon Jong Woo who moves to Seoul for a job. Jong Woo is still starting and decides to stay in a cheap small apartment where he needs to share the kitchen and bathroom with the other residents. Jong Woo didn't like the small apartment as well as his neighbors who he thought as suspicious and weird.
Strangers From Hell is a limited series from OCN with 10 episodes in total. The limited series was curated for a film-like experience that is obviously shown through directions, cinematography & editing.
Strangers From Hell didn't shy away with its genre of psychological horror because the last episode was rated NC-19 with most of episodes rated into PG-15. The series depicts blood, gore, and violence.
A good series consists of good foundations from the cast, director & technicalities, this series checked all those foundations for a small screen.
Im Si Wan plays the protagonist named Yoon Jong Woo. A man who came from a small town to Seoul that also has his inner conflicts from his past. Lee Dong Wook plays the mysterious dentist Seo Moon Zo. Lee Jung Eun as the old lady who owned the apartment. Lee Hyun Wook as the mysterious neighbor from the small apartment. Park Jong Hwan as the man who has complexity and doubled layers of personalities. Lee Jong Ok plays as a man who has perverted ways.
The casting was excellent for their characters and personalities that they need to project. This is Im Si Wan and Lee Dong Wook's first psychological thriller genre of a drama and it's a treat for their fans as the two well known Hallyu actors dived into a new genre to explore, expand their capabilities as actors and it didn't disappoint!
The supporting cast are also good as they portrayed the complexity of their characters;
Strangers From Hell is a series that is not for everybody, people will like it or not but I appreciate how this series takes on a genre that is very rare to tackled on especially most of this genre were sugar-coated on public broadcast but Strangers From Hell showed that small screens can also develop this kind of high-quality series with well-known actors who aren't afraid exploring a new genre that their fans might like or not.
In terms of cinematography & shots, like what I said this series was curated for a small screen but served as a film-like experience with 10 episodes that were carefully directed attached with a tight gripping soundtrack that was suitable for the genre.
I'm in hopes that Im Si Wan and Lee Dong Wook will take roles this again because it shows that they can do it and they are capable, defying what people expected them to do as actors. I'm so glad that this is Im Si Wan's comeback after his military service and it was worth it. I'm glad he didn't choose a sappy romance drama but he chose this, showing that he is that actor who can take any genre. For Lee Dong Wook, he's been around for so long in the industry, he did a lot of projects that made him known as a Hallyu actor but I'm so glad that he took this role as a challenged for himself as well as showing that he can do a genre that most people wouldn't think he could.
Strangers From Hell is already completed with 10 episodes and can watch through VIU.
